From intense to fleeting, from A to Z - what makes perfumes different?

Which perfume do you use? Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum or Extrait de Parfum? If you are now thinking “what's the difference?” You've come to the right place! We will explain briefly what is behind the names and which perfume is best for which occasion.

Z like composition

What is perfume actually made of? Usually it is a mixture of alcohol (approx. 80%) and / or water, which is enriched with essential oils of animal or vegetable origin. Nowadays, however, more and more synthetically produced essences are used, for example in the case of ambras, which occurs very rarely in nature - a substance that is one of the most valuable substances in the world and is therefore hardly available in its pure form in perfume production
(read more about it in our last article).

K for concentration

Perfumes are differentiated depending on the concentration of the fragrance essence:

  • Eau de Cologne (EdC): 3-5% fragrance oil, only lasts 1-2 hours
  • Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-10% fragrance oil content, lasts max. 3 hours
  • Eau de Parfum (EdP): 11-15% fragrance oil, lasts between 2 and 5 hours
  • Extrait de Parfum: up to 30% fragrance oil, often lasts longer than 5 hours

The higher the fragrance content, the more intense and longer the fragrance smells. So if you have the feeling that your scent disappears quickly, it is best to check the label again.

P like price

The difference is also evident in the price: perfumes with a rather low proportion of fragrance essences are often cheaper than the more highly concentrated fragrances. Often the price also depends on other factors, such as the quality of the ingredients used & the exclusivity of the brand.

G for opportunity

Many men swear by their eau de toilette (e.g. BOIS Vetiver Ambrato), as it is usually better in the office than an eye-catching eau de parfum. With this you are definitely on the safe side with colleagues, because tastes are known to be different. Intense smelling Eau de Parfums & Extraits de Parfum (e.g. Xerjoff 1861 Naxos or ArteOlfatto Black Hashish), on the other hand, are perfect for the afterwork event or the next date night. But the season also plays a role in the choice of perfume: In summer, men tend to resort to fresh, tart scents (e.g. Rance Heroique), in the cold season it can also be something strong and spicy (e.g. Farmacia SS. Annunziata Tabacco d'autore).
